Ontario has a graduated license system. You must be 16 years old to apply for a driver’s licence in Ontario. You must pass a written driving test and a vision test to earn your learner’s permit or G1. Earning your full “G” licence will require two additional road tests.
In Ontario you can apply for your driver’s licence at a DriveTest Centre.
In London the DriveTest Centre is located at 4380 Wellington Rd S, London, ON N6E 2Z6.
DriveWise offers courses through Gemini Sportsplex. Please see the SafeStart schedule for current course locations
You can begin driver training when you have obtained a G1 learner’s permit. You must be 16 years of age to apply for a learner’s permit.
Each training program varies in length to best reach the learning objectives. Our SafeStart program is 40 hours divided into in-vehicle, in-class, online and driving simulation training.

If you miss a class, you will be required to make up the class at a later time. But if you miss the 3rd class, you must make up the 3rd class during the next DriveWise session.
No, you do not need your G1 before beginning your driver’s ed. At DriveWise, we have students that attend SafeStart before obtaining their G1, either for convenience or because they have a friend attending a class and they’d like to take it together. However, you cannot begin your in-car driving lessons until you have a valid G1 licence.
We provide students with workbooks so all you need to bring is a pen. All of our SafeStart sessions have breaks for lunch so be sure to bring snacks and water to keep you fueled. Many of our students also walk to nearby fast food spots for lunch if you’d prefer not to pack a lunch.
No, if you are moving from another province in Canada and are licenced in that province, you just need to exchange your current licence for an Ontario driver’s licence. But laws vary from province to province so please make sure you know which ones differ. If you are new driver in Canada, you may be required to begin in the graduated licencing system. If so, you could take 4 months off your eligibility to obtain your G2 with an MTO approved BDE course like our SafeStart program.
See more about our driving courses for new citizens to Canada.
We have a high percentage of SafeStart students who pass on the first attempt. However, if you are not successful, you can book another road test in 10 days.
To get a certificate for your insurance provider, you will need to visit a physical Service Ontario location with your driver’s licence and ask for a driver’s licence history report. The cost is $12.00. You can also get it on Service Ontario’s website, if you prefer to have them mail you the copy.
